However internal organisations, human relations and rituals are key for the whole community to work together.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Explaining what Techfugees is is no easy task for one of its members; But it often starts with \u201cwe\u2019re a global volunteer-led community\u201d. And that\u2019s for a good reason. In those words, we try to sum up the richness and diversity behind the hundreds of volunteers involved in our so-called \u201cChapters\u201d. We are people with different backgrounds (political science, IT, human rights, entrepreneurship, design, humanitarian, researchers) coming together, outside of their working time to think about how technology can be used to empower displaced persons.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-10175 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/dev.techfugees.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/1.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"278\" height=\"250\" \/><\/p>\n<h5><b>Techfugees Chapters Bootcamp<\/b><\/h5>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For the 5th anniversary of Techfugees, on <\/span><b>October 24-25th <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Techfugees organized a <\/span><b>two-days virtual bootcamp<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for all the Chapters and their teams, to get to meet each-other, review our methodologies of work, common tools and strategy for 2021 and beyond.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-10176 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/dev.techfugees.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/2-1024x438.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"274\" srcset=\"https:\/\/dev.techfugees.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/2-1024x438.png 1024w, https:\/\/dev.techfugees.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/2-300x128.png 300w, https:\/\/dev.techfugees.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/2-768x329.png 768w, https:\/\/dev.techfugees.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/2.png 1439w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">About 60 people gathered<\/span><b> from the UK &#x1f1ec;&#x1f1e7;, Germany &#x1f1e9;&#x1f1ea;, Serbia &#x1f1f7;&#x1f1f8;, France &#x1f1eb;&#x1f1f7;, Denmark &#x1f1e9;&#x1f1f0;, Ireland &#x1f1ee;&#x1f1ea;, Jordan &#x1f1ef;&#x1f1f4;,\u00a0 Lebanon &#x1f1f1;&#x1f1e7;,\u00a0 Kenya &#x1f1f0;&#x1f1ea;, Nigeria &#x1f1f3;&#x1f1ec;, Uganda &#x1f1fa;&#x1f1ec;, Canada &#x1f1e8;&#x1f1e6;, United States &#x1f1fa;&#x1f1f8; <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">from cities, settlements and refugee camps across the world,<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">despite connectivity challenges, a global pandemic, the lockdowns announced here and there.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">From our day-to-day activities, to connectivity, financial inclusion, remote work, health &amp; Covid_19, entrepreneurship, a data hub, funding, volunteer coordination, impact measurement, communication, values, mission (without forgetting our Trivia-Night and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/natakallam.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Natakallam<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> coupons as a prize &#x1f52e;), the Bootcamp gave us the opportunity to take a step back and reflect on what we had learned as a community and identify area where we could do better.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><i>\u00ab\u00a0I am very frustrated not to be part of each session, I didn&rsquo;t realize how accessible the community was and how &lsquo;beautiful&rsquo; it was. It&rsquo;s stupid, but hey. I took a little slap.\u00a0\u00bb <\/i><\/b><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Volunteer, TF France<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><b><i>\u00ab\u00a0I think logistics were very well done overall. Bravo! I felt like the sessions kept to time and the transition between sessions was smooth. The best virtual conference I&rsquo;ve been to with COVID-19 for sure.\u00a0\u00bb<\/i><\/b><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Co-lead, Techfugees Toronto<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h5><b>The power of the collective <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(Why are communities so important?)<\/span><\/h5>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While building and growing the community, we learned from others (among whom Rachel Eilbot <\/span><b><i>Makesense<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Guillaume Capelle <\/span><b><i>Singa<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) that communities do not need tools at first. They need time above everything. This goes in accordance with Techfugees guiding principles, #notechsolutionism. Although we\u2019re in the middle of a global pandemic making physical gathering complex, we\u2019ve gotten used, over the years, to communicate and create social connections digitally. Tech is only a tool, a support for our vibrant community.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-10177 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/dev.techfugees.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/3.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"680\" height=\"510\" srcset=\"https:\/\/dev.techfugees.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/3.png 680w, https:\/\/dev.techfugees.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/3-300x225.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 680px) 100vw, 680px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h5><b>What makes Techfugees community special?<\/b><\/h5>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In his book \u00a0\u00bb <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=NugRZGDbPFU\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Where Good Ideas Come From<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00ab\u00a0, Steven Johnson draws parallel to the patterns of good ideas to patterns to what we see in nature. <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One of them is the coral reef, <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">an open, fertile environment where various species sustain and support each other. Openness and connectivity are valuable ingredients for fueling good innovative ideas.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In short, we think more creatively when we open our minds to many connected environments. Sharing ideas in an open environment are hunches and interconnection allows hunches to come together to nurture great ideas.<\/span><b> This is what we do at Techfugees. <\/b><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-10228 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/dev.techfugees.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/Capture-d\u2019\u00e9cran-2020-12-15-\u00e0-14.55.28.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"695\" height=\"261\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sourcing needs from the ground, getting displaced persons involved in any activity and decision making is dear to our hearts and makes the strength of our action. Technology comes next, but remain essential to us as:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It scales, so that solutions we help to develop and deploy may always be replicated and have impact on a much wider scale<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It disrupts time and space and so can help access resources and recover faster those assets<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is able to democratises access of refugees to basic needs and services<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It enables refugees to help themselves (bootstrapping attitude)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Harnessing the power of the many, embarrassing diversity for more creativity, enhancing fruitful international connection and experience sharing to build and grow solutions enabling displaced persons to have a better access to information, education, employment, health and social inclusion. <\/span><b>This is what we do at Techfugees.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And when we\u2019re talking about diversity, it isn\u2019t just a shiny trendy word. The Techfugees community does not have a face. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is <\/span><b>John<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in Kakuma Refugee Camp Kenya bringing value in every discussion despite the shaky internet connection and building tech solutions in virtual hackathons to tackle covid challenges across Africa, it is <\/span><b>Philip<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in Serbia organising international Data conferences in the Balkans, it is <\/span><b>Muzna<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in Lebanon reporting, in a much better english than my own arabic, on Facebook about regular evictions and lack of access to health services in Bekaa Valley, it is <\/span><b>Cansu<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> doing her PhD on technology and migration in Toronto\u2026 And the list goes on. Despite difficult daily lives ranging from explosions or arbitrary arrests because of one refugee status to forced displacement and resettlements, volunteers are creating bounds and long term connection. For instance, several volunteers who had just met each other online, welcomed others to sleep over in a foreign country to mentor for a hackathon. And the list goes on.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And beyond all these life experiences, we were all there, on-and-offline, throughout the year and for this first ever virtual bootcamp. We have great plans for 2021. Alongside the current activities from our community members, and just to mention a few here are some announcements&#8230;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1\/ The Techfugees community is starting a new phase of growth. <\/span><b>We\u2019re opening new Chapters in the Middle East and Africa<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. If you\u2019re interested to apply, fill out <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/forms\/d\/e\/1FAIpQLSdFImPwlXQqpnsmre5TpCG8OjTeQ1YqPAlWqKZXq6roqf3KTw\/viewform\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">this form<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-10180 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/dev.techfugees.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/5.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"512\" height=\"428\" srcset=\"https:\/\/dev.techfugees.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/5.png 512w, https:\/\/dev.techfugees.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/5-300x251.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 512px) 100vw, 512px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2\/ After an in-depth work on our database of tech4refugees projects, gathering 700+ projects tackling challenges faced by displaced persons through technology, <\/span><b>we will be launching our beta version of <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/basefugees.org\/en\"><b>Basefugees<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, an aggregation platform gathering the projects supported throughout Techfugees Global community to better support the teams with expertise, visibility, partnership implementation and access to funding.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">3\/ In March we also launched our latest project, the <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/tfdatahub.org\/\"><b>Techfugees Data Hub<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to initially map the impact of Covid_19 on displaced communities &amp; source existing tech solutions ready to be implemented. Since September, a new vision has been implemented to broaden the scope of research and collect data on challenges faced by displaced persons from a health, human rights and socio-economic standpoint and what can be done to protect &amp; empower displaced persons\u2019 primary needs across the world and connect them with tech solutions.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>4\/ <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Lastly, Techfugees&rsquo; Charity team led by Jos\u00e9phine Goube, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is getting ready to scale in Italy with the support of committed partners like Cisco Europe and L\u2019Oreal Foundation to reach out more refugee women and support their inclusion in the tech field, and we will be looking to support with volunteers the program;\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Over the years, our Global community grew bigger but even more importantly it grew stronger across the 5 continents.
